Losing the ability to get off the sofa alone is how independence actually ends. It is also preventable.

Mobility and fall prevention at home
What we work on

Keep them walking, keep them standing, keep them home.

Decline in older adults is rarely sudden. It is a slow loss of strength and balance that becomes visible only when something breaks.

balance

Balance and fall prevention

Standing balance, weight transfer and reaction training. A third of over 65s fall each year and a hip fracture changes everything that follows.

fitness_center

Strength for daily function

Getting off a chair, off the toilet and up the stairs. Leg strength is the single best predictor of staying independent.

directions_walk

Walking and endurance

Distance, pace and confidence outdoors. People stop walking because they are afraid, and then lose the ability because they stopped.

elderly

Post-fall confidence

Fear of falling causes more decline than the fall itself. Rebuilding confidence is as much of the work as rebuilding strength.

healing

Arthritis and joint pain

Managing knee, hip and back arthritis with loading and movement rather than progressively doing less.

home_health

Home hazard assessment

Rugs, thresholds, bathroom rails, bed height, lighting. Most falls happen at home and most are on something we can point at.

When to call

The warning signs families miss.

They have had a fall

Even one without injury. A first fall is the strongest predictor of a second, and the window to act is now.

They hold furniture to walk

Furniture walking means balance has already declined. It is treatable at this stage and much harder later.

Struggling out of a chair

Using arms to push up from a seat is a clear marker of leg strength loss and a reliable predictor of future falls.

They have stopped going out

Withdrawal from walking outside is usually fear, not inability, and it accelerates physical decline quickly.

After a hospital stay

Even a week in bed costs older adults significant muscle. Post-discharge is a critical and frequently missed window.

Arthritis is limiting them

Doing less protects the joint in the short term and weakens everything around it in the long term.

Have they fallen?

Tell us what happened and how they are moving now. We will tell you honestly what can be recovered and how long it is likely to take.

How it works

From first message to care at the door.

Tell us the situation

Age, mobility now, any falls, any diagnoses, and what they could do six months ago.

Home assessment

Strength, balance, gait and the home itself. Rugs, steps, bathroom and bed height all get looked at.

A realistic programme

Specific goals with measurable targets, at a frequency they can actually tolerate.

Family and carer training

How to assist, how to supervise safely, and which exercises to keep going between sessions.

Mum fell twice in a month and we were terrified of a third. Eight weeks of physio and she has not fallen since.

He had stopped leaving the flat entirely. The therapist walked with him a little further every week until he was going to the shop again.

She spotted three hazards in the hallway we had walked past for years. Two of them we fixed that afternoon.

After two weeks in hospital my father could not get off the sofa. Nobody warned us that would happen. The physio got him back.

Patient with someone who is not an easy patient. That deserves saying.

FAQ

Questions families ask before booking.

Is it worth it at eighty five?
Yes. Strength and balance respond to training at every age, including into the nineties. The gains may be smaller but the consequences of not training are much larger, because the margin between independence and dependence is thinner.
How often are sessions needed?
Typically one to three times a week for six to twelve weeks, plus a short daily home programme. Consistency matters far more than session intensity in this age group.
They refuse to do exercises. What then?
Very common. We build the programme into things they already do, keep it short, and involve the family or carer. Twelve exercises nobody does is worse than three that get done.
Can you help after a hip fracture or replacement?
Yes, and the sooner the better. Post-fracture and post-replacement rehabilitation in older adults is where home physiotherapy makes the biggest difference, because attendance at clinics is so poor in this group.
Do you assess the home for fall hazards?
Yes, as part of the first visit. It is one of the main reasons home visits beat clinic appointments for older adults. We will tell you exactly what to change and what it will cost.
Can this be combined with a carer?
Yes, and it often should be. The physiotherapist sets the programme and the carer keeps it going daily, which is what actually produces the result.
