The range of motion you lose in the first three weeks is the hardest thing in rehabilitation to get back.

Why timing matters

Early rehabilitation is not optional, it is the operation finishing.

A well-performed joint replacement can still end in a stiff, painful joint if the rehabilitation is late, inconsistent or generic.

straighten

Range of motion

The single most time-critical goal. Stiffness sets in fast after knee and shoulder surgery and becomes progressively harder to reverse.

fitness_center

Strength rebuilding

Muscle around an operated joint weakens remarkably quickly. Structured loading rebuilds it in the correct sequence and at the correct time.

directions_walk

Gait and weight bearing

Walking correctly within the surgeon's weight-bearing restrictions. A limp that is allowed to persist becomes a habit and causes new problems.

healing

Swelling and pain management

Swelling limits movement and movement limits swelling. Managing both together is what makes the early weeks progress.

assignment

Surgeon's protocol followed

Every surgeon has a preferred timeline for weight bearing, range and loading. We work to theirs rather than a generic template.

home_health

Home programme that is realistic

Exercises you will actually do, at a frequency you can sustain. Most rehabilitation happens between the sessions, not during them.

Surgeries we rehabilitate

Rehabilitation matched to the operation.

Knee replacement

The most common. Range of motion in the first six weeks largely determines the final result.

Hip replacement

Gait retraining, strength and adherence to movement precautions so the joint is not dislocated during recovery.

ACL and knee arthroscopy

Structured return-to-activity progression rather than guessing when it is safe to run, pivot or return to sport.

Spinal surgery

Core stability, safe movement patterns and gradual return to loading, working strictly within the surgeon's restrictions.

Shoulder surgery

Rotator cuff repair and replacement. Shoulders stiffen faster than any other joint and the early passive work is critical.

Fracture repair

Rehabilitation after plating, nailing or immobilisation, timed to the healing stage and the surgeon's clearance.

Surgery booked?

Arrange physiotherapy before the operation, not after. It costs nothing extra and means rehabilitation starts on the day the surgeon intended rather than three weeks late.

How it works

From first message to care at the door.

Send the surgery details

Operation, date, and the surgeon's protocol or discharge notes if you have them.

Assessment at home

Range, strength, swelling, gait and what the home layout actually allows.

Structured programme

Session frequency and a home exercise plan with clear weekly targets, aligned to the surgeon's timeline.

Progress and discharge

We reassess, progress the load, and discharge you when you no longer need us rather than when the package runs out.

Knee replacement at seventy two. Three sessions a week at home and his range at six weeks was better than the surgeon expected.

Not having to get in and out of a car twice a week in the first month was worth it on its own.

They rang my surgeon to clarify the weight-bearing instruction instead of guessing. That told me everything about how they work.

ACL rehab with a proper return to sport progression. I was not just told to rest and hope.

Shoulder repair, and she was in the house four days after the operation. The stiffness never got a chance to set in.

FAQ

Questions families ask before booking.

When should physiotherapy start after surgery?
For most joint replacements, within the first week, often within days. Your surgeon sets the timeline and we follow it. The most common and most costly mistake is waiting until the first follow-up appointment to start.
Do you follow my surgeon's protocol?
Yes. Send us the discharge notes or the protocol and we work to it exactly. If the instructions are unclear on weight bearing or range limits, we contact the surgeon rather than guess.
How many sessions will I need?
Knee replacement typically needs two to three sessions a week for six to eight weeks, then tapering. Simpler procedures need far less. We estimate honestly at the assessment and reassess as you progress.
Can you bring equipment?
Yes. Therapists bring what the session requires. We will also tell you the few items worth buying for your home programme rather than selling you a package of equipment.
Is home physio as effective as a clinic?
For post-operative rehabilitation in the early weeks, usually more effective, because attendance is far higher and the training happens in the environment you actually have to move around in. For late-stage return to sport, a gym setting can be better and we will say so.
Do you also provide nursing after surgery?
Yes. Wound care, drains and pain monitoring often run alongside physiotherapy in the first two weeks. We can put both on one care plan.
