Answers from a nurse, in your home
What the nurse checks

Observation, not guesswork.

A newborn visit is structured clinical observation, documented, so you have something real to show your paediatrician.

monitor_weight

Weight and growth tracking

Weight, length and head circumference plotted against WHO growth curves, so slow gain is caught in days rather than at the six week check.

wb_sunny

Jaundice assessment

Visual and risk-factor assessment at every visit, with clear guidance on when a bilirubin test or doctor review is genuinely needed.

healing

Umbilical cord care

Cleaning, inspection and healing checks, and clear direction on what normal looks like versus what needs a doctor.

local_drink

Feeding evaluation

Latch, intake, feeding frequency and output. Wet and dirty nappies are the most reliable evidence a newborn is getting enough.

thermostat

Vital signs

Temperature, heart rate and breathing checked and recorded, because newborns show illness through vitals long before they show it obviously.

bathtub

Bathing, hygiene and safe sleep

Bathing, skin care, nappy care and safe-sleep setup, done with you the first time so you are confident doing it alone.

Who books this

From reassurance to genuine clinical need.

First-time parents

The most common booking. A professional eye a few times a week while confidence builds, instead of searching symptoms at 3am.

Paediatrician asked for monitoring

When your doctor wants regular weight or jaundice checks but you would rather not do clinic runs with a newborn.

Jaundice being watched

Visual assessment at home with clear escalation criteria, rather than repeat trips for repeat blood tests.

Slow weight gain

Objective weight and feeding data, tracked over days, which is what actually resolves the question.

Premature or NICU discharge

Closer monitoring in the first weeks, and parents who were taught in a NICU learning to do it at home.

Twins

Two babies with two feeding patterns and two sets of observations. A second pair of trained hands changes the arithmetic.

Worried about something right now?

Message us and describe it. If it needs a visit we will arrange one, and if it does not we will tell you that too rather than book you in.

How it works

From first message to care at the door.

Tell us about the baby

Age, weight at birth and now, feeding method, and anything the hospital flagged.

We match the nurse

Newborn observation is a specific skill. We send someone who does it every week, not someone available.

The visit

Full structured check, plus as many questions as you want answered. Nobody is in a hurry.

Written notes

Everything recorded and left with you, so your paediatrician sees data rather than your recollection.

First baby, no family here, and we were checking her breathing every twenty minutes. Two visits a week for a month and we became normal people again.

Our paediatrician wanted weekly weight checks. Doing it at home instead of the clinic with a two week old was so much easier.

She spotted that the jaundice was getting worse rather than better and sent us straight in. We would have waited.

Taught us how to bathe him and do the cord properly. We had been terrified of both.

With twins it was the difference between managing and drowning. Honest, calm and very experienced.

FAQ

Questions families ask before booking.

Is this a nurse or a nanny?
A nurse. Weight tracking, jaundice assessment, vital signs and cord inspection are clinical observations requiring a DHA licence. If you need childcare rather than clinical monitoring, tell us and we will cost that instead.
Does this replace my paediatrician?
No. It is monitoring and support between appointments. The nurse documents findings and tells you clearly when a doctor visit is actually needed rather than reassuring you when she should not.
How soon after birth can you visit?
Usually within 24 to 48 hours of discharge, and same day is often possible. Some families arrange it before the due date.
How often do families book?
Commonly two to three visits a week for the first fortnight, tapering as feeding and weight settle. Some book a single visit just to have a question answered properly.
Can you help if we are worried about infection?
Nurses follow strict hand hygiene, use clean equipment and do not attend if they are unwell. Home visits also avoid clinic waiting rooms full of sick children, which is a real advantage with a newborn.
Do you cover nights?
Yes. If the concern is night feeding and settling rather than clinical monitoring, our newborn night nurse service is usually the better fit.
